  • 2-17-11 "The Washwoman" Summary Sentences

Today's Agenda:

1. Students enter the room and copy the learning objectives and homework.

2. 2-22-11 Talk about Fiction and Nonfiction pages 4-7
  • Last week you took Cornell Notes on fiction and nonfiction.
  • Today, you will use your notes, as well as what you remember from the reading, to complete the following template. You have 15-20 minutes to complete the paragraph. You may ask each other for help, but write your own paragraph:
  • TemplateforFiction-NonfictionSummaryParagraph.pdf
  • Show students the above PDF.
  • Tell them to use their notes on Fiction and Nonfiction as well as the textbook.
  • After students have written their paragraphs, have them pair up and read their paragraphs to each other. Then, have two or three stand up and read their paragraphs to the class.
  • Quick reflection question to the class: What was it like to write with this template? Easy? Hard?

3. 2-22-11 Fiction vs. Nonfiction Quiz
  • For each item listed below, categorize it as fiction or nonfiction in your notebook. Don't copy the writing, just write "fiction" or "nonfiction". After 1 minute, we will share our answers to see how you did:
    • An essay on the invention of the telephone
    • A book about the childhood of Barack Obama
    • A book about the childhood of Spiderman
    • A short story about a school on Jupiter
  • Now, look through your textbook. Find 2 examples of fiction and 2 examples of nonfiction. Write your examples down and explain why you think they are fiction/nonfiction. Your sentences should look something like:
    • "I found ................. on page ............... I think this is an example of (fiction/nonfiction) because .......................................
    • You have 5-10 minutes to find your examples.
  • Give students time to share one example of fiction and one example of nonfiction with a partner.
  • Call on a couple volunteers to offer their findings.

4. Grammar Book
  • Review "Verbs" pages 13-16. Students share their responses with each other in small groups. Ask students if their are any confusing parts of this assignment.
  • Preview pages 17-20, then have students begin this assignment.

If any time remains, ahve students re-read "The Washwoman" in small groups. As students read, they need to look for the answers to these questions:
  1. What is the truth according to the washwoman's son?
  2. How did that truth change?
